Kill "The BILL.."

The fighter cocks at the Parliament of India came out with a classic decision of passing the Womens’Reservation Bill (WRB) into the Rajya Sabha. At that very moment the press went gaga with news flashes of female MPs beaming and flashing signs of victory as they posed for the cameras; claiming the day to be a historical event for the women folk of the country. Empowerment of women of sorts. They looked pretty confident and happy…..yet inspite of being a feminist myself…..i wasn’t…..i still ain’t n I shall not be happy bout it.

Just one question-How does the bill help me!? Or rather the millions of the ME folks like me i.e? Categorizing 30% seats in the parliament as reserved for women does not make my life easier ….not even one minuscule bit! Continuing the case of the ME folk- Lets define it first – They are smart, educated, self-reliant and ambitious. They blend with both, the ethnic and the modern and are responsible citizens of the country. How does the bill help this ME folk when at no point in life they shall reach out to joining politics? If women get extra seats to sit on, over there, how does it help us here. Sadly women at the diplomatic level have failed to see the bigger picture. On the contrary if they are seeing it, they have taken a very long route towards its realization.

Coming straight to the point..the bigger picture is,that every single woman in India, from any age group, from any part of the country, or from any(diplomatically created..!!) levels of the society and the ME folk…do not need reservation. All we need is respect & equality. A change of attitude towards women & a behavior that makes them feel all the more comfortable in the society.

The passing or inclusion of the bill does not ensure that women will not be deprived education, exploited, abused, teased n looked down upon as the weaker sex. It does not…RIGHT..?? Hence I am not a supporter of the “BILL”

The truth is that the ME folk does not require a separate queue on various ticketing counters; does not require quotas in education n employment areas and most importantly not to be treated on the basis of some gender bias. All that the ME folk want is to be treated as a human being. Just like everyone else…. Why are they made to realize time n again that they are women and hence are not supposed to do a certain things?? A number of women including myself sometimes stop tryin just because of the realization that we are women. Is it a crime..??

The Bill does create a gateway for women to reach the top spots and change the scene. It makes the passage easier. My point is, why a situation of sorts, where women need a gateway or an easier passage? Why is the route different for us? what causes led to our being treated in a manner…that we need pity. An urbanized educated Indian women would rather take up a vocation on the basis of her abilities, than be asked to join since a woman needs special n softer treatment.

With all due respect to every single person starting from Mr. H D DeweGowda to the present supporters of the same…your high flying Bill is only making the women diplomats at various levels of political mileu…stronger. But it does not save me from the 10 types of incidents of various kinds that are enforced upon me every time I am out in the open….just because I am a woman.

I am proud that I am a woman, But for this life . I’ve had enough. Wanna be reborn as a woman if I can also sit on the roundabout at midnight with my girlfriends and chill. And yes…..i am educated enough to know where to draw the line between fun n discipline.

Lastly….revisiting Pink Floyd with a different msg:
“We don’t need no RESERVATION..
We don’t need no REPRESENTATION CONTROL…
No Dark sarcasm by the CHAUVANISTS…
Give us fair rights and leave THE BILL ALONE…
All in all its just another brick in the wall…”

Hope the ones who are supposed to read this….. READ THIS…!!

  1. very well written.. although i agree with the bill.. as from somewhere it should start maybe from the top.. 30% women in the parliament would be able to present women issues more strongly than before.. nd slowly this will start flowing in all directions..
